Branch in focus: Entrepreneurship in Medicine

Doctors and medical students often ask me about pursuing a career as a Doctorpreneur.

Here's my advice:

  1. Medical college and residency won't teach you about entrepreneurship. They focus on clinical care and research, not innovation. If you're interested in entrepreneurship, you'll need to seek out other learning opportunities because medicine tends to value conformity over creativity.
  2. Start by becoming a doctor first. Finish your residency and gain clinical experience. This will help you understand the healthcare system and identify opportunities. Read up on business topics, connect with local resources and mentors, and consider taking a gap year to explore entrepreneurial endeavors.
  3. Don't wait to pursue entrepreneurship after becoming a doctor. Start developing an entrepreneurial mindset while in medical school or during residency by learning about business in your free time.
  4. Doctorpreneurship involves creating value through innovation in healthcare. Start small and focus on addressing specific customer needs. Be a problem seeker, not just a problem solver.
  5. Your skills as a doctor won't automatically translate to success in business. Seek education, build networks, and surround yourself with mentors who can help fill in your knowledge gaps.
  6. Trust your instincts when deciding how involved you want to be in entrepreneurship. Consider serving on advisory boards of start-ups to gain experience.
  7. Recognize that being a good doctor doesn't necessarily make you a good entrepreneur. Be open to learning and seeking advice from those with business expertise.
  8. Entrepreneurship isn't for everyone. If you don't have the right mindset, it's okay to pursue other paths.
  9. Failure is a part of entrepreneurship. Learn from your mistakes and keep pushing forward.
  10. Look beyond the medical field for inspiration and ideas. Attend events outside of healthcare to broaden your perspective. Don't be afraid to borrow successful ideas from other industries and adapt them to healthcare.
  11. Stay personally invested in your ventures, but don't take setbacks personally.
  12. Consider your residency choice carefully if you're interested in entrepreneurship.
  13. Understanding the business side of medicine is important for all healthcare professionals.
  14. Medical students with entrepreneurial aspirations should seek out relevant advice and opportunities.
  15. Take control of your finances and always have a backup plan. We call it Multiple Sources of Income (MSI) plan.

Remember, it's okay to take a non-traditional path in your career, and don't let the demands and expectations of society deter you from pursuing your entrepreneurial goals.

The Doctorpreneur Academy Quotes from Legends in medicine and entrepreneurship

Summary

Ralph Waldo Emerson's quote encapsulates the essence of true success: making a positive impact on others' lives. It suggests that genuine fulfillment lies not in personal achievements, but in the ability to ease someone else's burden through one's existence. Emerson emphasizes the profound significance of compassionate actions and selflessness. Success, according to him, isn't measured by wealth or fame, but by the difference one makes in the world, even if it's just in one person's life. It reflects the power of empathy and kindness, highlighting the beauty of altruism and human connection.

Brief

"When Breath Becomes Air" chronicles neurosurgeon Paul Kalanithi's battle with metastatic lung cancer. Despite initial misdiagnosis, his symptoms worsen, prompting him to confront the possibility of cancer. Struggling to balance his residency with declining health, conflicts arise with his wife over communication. Finally acknowledging his condition to a friend, Kalanithi's fears are confirmed upon returning home. Admitted to the hospital, the once-examining doctor becomes the patient. The memoir poignantly captures Kalanithi's journey, from denial to acceptance, offering profound reflections on mortality, love, and the search for meaning in the face of adversity.
