Major Healthcare Developments This Week - #54

1. Zepto launches Super Mall, expands pharmacy to diagnostics services
The launch of the Super Mall segment in its app comes as quick commerce platform try to increase the average order value (AOV) to improve unit economics.
Zepto has also expanded its healthcare offerings by partnering with Orange Health Labs to launch diagnostic services. Customers can now book home tests—including full body checkups, CBC, blood sugar, and thyroid tests—with sample collection in 60 minutes and reports delivered within six hours. Test prices range from ₹180 to ₹11,999 after discounts.
This expansion comes as Zepto prepares to revive its IPO plans, aiming to raise $450–500 million through fresh equity and an offer for sale. Recently, Zepto also secured $450 million in funding to scale operations and grow order volumes..

2. Ketogenic Diets Show Modest Benefits for Depression, but Evidence for Anxiety Remains Unclea

A new systematic review and meta-analysis published in JAMA Psychiatry reports that ketogenic diets are associated with modest reductions in depressive symptoms, while evidence for anxiety remains inconsistent. Researchers analyzed 50 studies involving more than 41,000 adults across psychiatric and nonpsychiatric populations. In randomized trials, ketogenic diets showed a small to medium improvement in depressive symptoms, especially when biochemical ketone monitoring confirmed nutritional ketosis. Very low-carbohydrate diets and studies involving nonobese participants showed stronger effects, while high-carbohydrate comparator diets weakened the association. Quasi-experimental studies also supported moderate improvements in depression.

For anxiety, randomized trials showed no significant benefit, though quasi-experimental studies suggested within-group improvement over time. Case reports described potential stabilization of mood and psychotic symptoms in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Authors conclude that ketogenic diets may benefit depressive symptoms but emphasize caution due to study variability, short follow-up, and limited evidence for anxiety.

3. New Mouse Model Shows APOE4 to APOE2 Switch Can Boost Brain Resilience

Researchers at the University of Kentucky have developed a groundbreaking experimental mouse model that may open new paths for Alzheimer’s disease treatment. Published in Nature Neuroscience, the study focuses on the APOE gene, a major determinant of Alzheimer’s risk. The team created a model that can “flip” the harmful APOE4 variant to the protective APOE2 version in adult mice. When this genetic switch was activated specifically in astrocytes—brain support cells—the mice showed major improvements, including reduced amyloid plaque buildup, decreased inflammation, and stronger memory performance. Notably, even switching the gene later in life produced benefits across multiple Alzheimer’s-related pathways. The findings highlight the central role of astrocytes in how APOE shapes disease risk and demonstrate how targeted gene editing could shift the brain from vulnerability to resilience. Although still in early stages, the research offers an important foundation for future human therapies aimed at preventing or slowing Alzheimer’s.

4.10 Non-Clinical Career Options for Doctors Nobody Talks About
Non-clinical careers are becoming a powerful path for doctors as the healthcare industry evolves. Many doctors today are choosing roles beyond hospitals to gain better work-life balance, higher income, and more creative freedom. These options are rarely discussed in medical colleges, but they offer strong growth opportunities in 2025. Popular paths include medical content creation, where doctors educate the public through videos, blogs, and online courses. Healthcare management and hospital administration allow doctors to lead operations and improve systems. Other opportunities include medico-legal consulting, healthtech product development, medical writing, and public health leadership roles that create large-scale social impact. Doctors are also thriving in entrepreneurship, pharmaceuticals, corporate health, and online medical education. These careers provide flexibility, innovation, and financial potential. The message is clear: medicine is much bigger than working inside a clinic. Non-clinical careers are not backup choices. They are strategic growth opportunities, and The Doctorpreneur Academy supports doctors exploring this new path.

Book I'm Reading This Week

Never Split The Difference
by
Chris Voss

Core Idea:

Never Split the Difference is a negotiation book written by former FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss. It explains practical communication techniques that help people build trust, understand others deeply, and guide conversations toward positive outcomes. Voss shows that negotiation happens constantly in daily life, not only during high-stakes situations. Mastering calm listening, empathy, and emotional intelligence leads to better results than pushing aggressively or compromising too fast.

The book teaches skills like tactical empathy, mirroring, labelling emotions, and asking calibrated questions. These tools help you uncover what people truly need and create solutions where both sides feel valued. It reminds us that communication is less about talking and more about understanding.

Key Takeaways
• Listening with empathy builds trust faster than persuasion
• People respond to feeling understood, not pressured
• The right questions help reveal real issues beneath the surface
• Emotional control is the most powerful negotiation tool

👩‍⚕️ Doctor’s Perspective

For doctors, this book reinforces the importance of clear communication and emotional awareness in patient care. Medicine is full of negotiations: discussing treatment plans, helping patients overcome fear, managing expectations, and collaborating with colleagues.

Doctors can apply these ideas by:
• Using active listening so patients feel heard and respected
• Asking open and calm questions to learn what patients truly worry about
• Labeling emotions such as fear or confusion to reduce anxiety
• Improving teamwork and conflict resolution within medical teams
• Building trust that leads to better compliance and healthier outcomes

👉 In healthcare, negotiation is not about winning. It is about connection, clarity, and guiding patients to the best possible decisions with compassion.

Why Patient Experience Should Be a Core Part of Every Doctor’s Practice Strategy?

Modern healthcare is no longer just about accurate diagnosis and treatment. Today, the overall patient experience plays a major role in satisfaction, trust, and long-term success. Patients remember how you made them feel just as much as the care you provided.

Here are 10 reasons why patient experience matters for doctors 👇

1-Creates Strong First Impressions. Warm interactions reduce anxiety and build comfort.

2-Increases Patient Loyalty. A positive experience keeps patients returning.

3-Encourages Word-of-Mouth Referrals. Happy patients become powerful promoters.

4-Improves Treatment Compliance. Patients follow advice when they feel heard and respected.

5-Reduces Patient Complaints. Clear communication and empathy prevent frustration.

6-Strengthens Online Reviews. Satisfied patients naturally leave positive feedback.

7-Boosts Practice Reputation. Experience shapes perception more than advertisements.

8-Enhances Clinical Outcomes. Better rapport supports better healthcare results.

9-Increases Operational Efficiency. Organized systems create a smooth appointment flow.

10-Supports Long-Term Growth. Great experience turns a one-time visit into a lifelong relationship

💡 Patients may not always remember medical details, but they always remember how you treated them.

👉 Doctors, what steps are you taking to improve patient experience this month?
