Major Healthcare Developments This Week - #36

1. India’s First MBBS-BAMS Course Sparks National Outrage: Doctors Speak Out Against Mixopathy

The Indian government's proposal to introduce an integrated MBBS-BAMS course at JIPMER, Puducherry, combining Allopathy and Ayurveda, has triggered strong backlash from the medical community. Major associations like the Indian Medical Association (IMA), FAIMA, UDF, and T-JUDA have opposed the move, calling it unscientific, regressive, and risky for patient safety. They argue that merging two fundamentally different medical systems will create underqualified hybrid doctors, dilute medical education, and jeopardize both traditions. The associations urge the government to withdraw the plan and instead promote independent growth of each system.

The Doctorpreneur Academy supports scientific integrity in healthcare and encourages doctors to voice their concerns and protect the future of Indian medicine.

4. Flush with Caution: CDSCO Releases List of 17 High-Risk Medicines That Should Never Be Tossed in the Trash

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has released a new guidance document recommending that 17 high-risk medicines—including narcotics and sedatives like Fentanyl, Tramadol, Oxycodone, and Morphine—should be flushed down the toilet or sink to prevent accidental poisoning, especially in children and pets. While flushing is generally discouraged due to environmental concerns, CDSCO makes an exception for these drugs due to their extreme toxicity if misused. The guidance also urges the creation of drug take-back programs at local pharmacies and healthcare centers to safely collect expired or unused medicines. It outlines specific disposal responsibilities for retailers, manufacturers, hospitals, and drug inspectors, with added rules for hazardous drugs like radioactive or cytotoxic substances.

The Doctorpreneur Academy:
Quote from Legends in medicine and entrepreneurship

Brief:

“The E-Myth Revisited” by Michael E. Gerber is a guide for small business owners to build a successful and sustainable business. The book explains that many people start businesses because they are good at a skill (like baking or photography), but they often struggle because they don’t understand how to run a business.

Gerber says that to grow, you need to stop working in the business (doing everything yourself) and start working on the business (creating systems and processes that others can follow). He introduces the idea of thinking like a franchise owner—building your business so it can run smoothly without needing you all the time. The key message is: build your business with a clear structure, strong systems, and a long-term vision so it can grow and succeed beyond just your personal efforts.
